HIGH COUNTRY CONSERVATION SUMMIT
BREAKOUT GROUP DISCUSSION

Bringing "We" and "They" together in a safe, non-threatening environment

and

How to re-educate or interest the public in our causes

Targets:

1) Children - Long-term project - would take several years

a. Do through the school system or home-school network
b. Educate them about the environment/sustainability through projects they do at home
c. Educate their parents by having them help the students with these projects

2) Adults - Shorter-term project - can be started soon

a. How do we get them to listen to us?
b. How do we get them to buy in?

Ways to educate the adults:

1) Develop a video &/or ad campaign

a. Purpose: show what would happen without any controls to development

i. Show people who are concrete realists - who can only see what is - what the future may be that they can't currently see.
ii. Show areas that have been wisely developed vs. areas that have not been and are, therefore, destroyed.

b. Possible name/slogan: "2 Futures for Watauga - Which Do You Choose"
c. "Safe" ways to disseminate it into the community via:

i. Churches

1. Work through the 3 Forks Baptist Ministerial Association
2. Work through other county Ministerial Associations and groups, i.e., Episcopal Diocese, monthly Ministers Association's meetings, etc.

ii. Volunteer Fire Departments
iii. Service Organizations, i.e., Ruritans, Moose, VFW, etc.

d. Create teams of people, especially including native Wataugans, to approach the above targeted community distribution sites (1c) and have them see the video and bring it to the others in their groups to start a grassroots movement from within.
e. Reach out also to other smaller/non-traditional groups within the county:

i. African-American community/Junaluska
ii. ASU students

2) Have a "Day of Dialogue"

a. A conference similar to today's summit
b. Involve local churches and ministers along with conservation groups to promote discussion between them
c. Emphasize collaboration to support the Earth, God's creation, and to stop the desecration currently occurring.
